Paksas said one of the candidates was a member of the party’s political group, while the other was a non-affiliated person who works in the law enforcement. He refused to give any names.
Last week, the Order and Justice party submitted four candidates for the post, but all were rejected.
Upon Paksas’ insistence, the prime minister decided to remove incumbent Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis from the post after he announced plans to run for parliament with the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union. Under the coalition agreement, the interior minister is nominated by the Order and Justice party.
After receiving a proposal from Butkevičius, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will decide on Skvernelis’ dismissal and appointment of his successor.
