OSCE praises Lithuanian president’s veto of law on court reporting

“This is a very positive step and I am pleased to be able to welcome it, especially on the World Press Freedom Day, which this year is dedicated to the right to access to information,” Dunja Mijatovic said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Grybauskaitė last week vetoed the amendments Introducing criminal liability for making public material from closed court proceedings. The offence would be punishable by community service or by a fine, but journalists could also be subject to arrest.

Lithuanian journalists have criticized the amendments, saying that they would limit the opportunity to inform the public about court proceedings and would open the way for bringing cases against journalists or media organizations.
