Outgoing interior minister faces probe by electoral commission

Skvernelis is being forced out of the post after having announced he will run for parliament with the Peasant and Greens Union, which is not in the ruling coalition.

The communication department of the Ministry of the Interior recently circulated a commentary by Skvernelis, in which he defends Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the Peasant and Greens Union.

The Central Electoral Commission says this could be in breach of the rule forbidding state officials to use state resources for personal campaigning.

Parliamentary ethics watchdogs have said they will look into Skvernelis actions. Meanwhile the Chief Official Ethics Commission has told LRT it has yet to decide whether to open an investigation.

“After opening and conducting the investigation, the commission will be able to say if there was a clash of interests in the minster’s actions, namely, the use of services of PR professionals for his own promotion rather than the institution’s he works for,” Romas Valetnukevičius, the commission’s chairman, said.

If Skvernelis is found to have breached the rules, he could face administrative sanctions.
