Over 4,300 run in Vilnius to commemorate January 1991 victims

The attendance of this year’s run exceeded last year’s by several hundred people.

“We hope that even more people will participate in 25th anniversary run next year,” Vidmantas Dobrovolskas, one of the organizers of the event, told BNS.

The 9-kilometer run, called the Road of Life and Death, started at Antakalnis Cemetery, where the victims of the Jan. 13 events were buried, with the finish outside the TV Tower.

Among the runners were not only residents of Lithuania, but also visitors from the United States, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden.

Organized annually since 1992, the tribute run always attracts large numbers of participants.

Moscow in January 1991 tried to overthrow the legitimate government of Lithuania, which had declared independence from the Soviet Union on 11 March 1990.

Fourteen unarmed civilians were killed and more than 1,000 were injured during the attempts of the Soviet army and special units to seize the TV Tower and the Lithuanian Radio and Television building in Vilnius on 13 January.
