Parliamentary probe ‘first step in attempts to impeach president’ – liberal leader

Masiulis insists that the move is nothing more than score settling by the ruling coalition parties, angry with President Dalia Grybauskaitė for her criticism. The Liberal Movement will have no part in it, Masiulis says.

“We made an unequivocal decision. The liberals will not take part this score settling. I think it is unfair and uncivilized and might be against the Constitution,” Masiulis has told Žinių Radijas. “Clearly, with six months left to the parliamentary elections, individuals from the ruling coalition – primarily the social democrats and the Order and Justice – are marred with internal problems and want to exert direct pressure on the law enforcement and, by the same token, do a public relations campaign.”

Grybauskaitė said on Thursday that the proposed parliamentary investigation was “direct pressure” upon law enforcement by politicians and parties that are themselves under investigation.

The initiators of the probe argue that classified intelligence reports are being used by state leaders to discredit political opponents. After passing the first vote in parliament, the proposal will be discussed during a Seimas plenary in May.
