Forty-five members of the party’s council voted in favour of the decision and three abstained.
“I am confident that this is the best decision. The society and the state need a leader whose reputation, competence and professionalism are beyond the slightest doubt. Skvernelis is the man,” the party’s leader Ramūnas Karbauskis said in a press release.
Skvernelis, who is not a member of the party, announced his plans to run for parliament in late March.
