Butkevičius expects that the Lithuanian parliament will approve higher excise duties on alcohol, he said in an interview on Žinių Radijas. A long-term programme, under which excise duty on alcohol will be incrementally raised every year, has already been approved.
Moreover, efforts against alcoholism must include educational programmes on the harm of alcohol, the prime minister says. He quotes a successful example of the traffic safety programme that has helped reduce fatalities on the roads.
In terms of alcohol consumption and damage it causes, Lithuania is classed in the highest risk group together with Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Kazakhstan, and Moldova.
