The prime minister congratulated the school’s students and teachers on the occasion of 11 March, Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania.
“I would like to invite people of all ethnic groups living in Lithuania to celebrate our country’s birthday together. I am pleased that gymnasium students will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence in new premises. In 2014 the Government allotted over EUR 1 million for the renovation,” said Prime Minister Butkevičius.
Opened in 1989, the school was an night school of the Yiddish and Hebrew languages, Jewish history and traditions for children of the Jewish community at the beginning, with Jewish events organized by youth on Sundays. In 1991, the school started offering daytime lessons and was later restructured into the Vilnius Gymnasium of Sholom Aleichem.
The school now has 310 students and will be able to accept up to 350 after the renovation is completed by 1 September. The students are mainly children of Jewish decent, but ethnic Lithuanian, Russian and Polish students are also enrolled.
