PM hits back at president’s criticism over implementation of reforms

“It seems to me that, seeing the government carrying out reforms in areas that had been untouched for a number of years, the president’s office tries to get involved and thus compensate for their inactivity,” he told reporters.

Skvernelis was commenting on a recent statement by Daiva Ulbinaitė, spokeswoman for President Dalia Grybauskaitė, that “a lack of capacity by the government and individual ministries to implement key laws is becoming increasingly apparent”.

According to the spokeswoman, the government’s lack of experience and skills and its inability to implement laws in a timely and quality manner becomes dangerous as this stalls progress in the state and discredits reforms promised by the ruling parties.

“The government’s program includes these measures. They had to be carried out much earlier. We are pleased to see the president’s office getting itself actively involved in this process and we welcome cooperation,” Skvernelis said.

The skirmish between the prime minister and the president’s office centered around the implementation of a children’s rights reform.
