“I don’t think there’s anything to investigate. I don’t see any reason for any legal responsibility, and I think that the story is basically over,” Skvernelis told reporters on Thursday.
“We need to focus on the most important issues for our state,” he added.
The Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs has decided to look at a part of the material of a political corruption investigation and emails between Grybauskaitė and Masiulis as far as they are related to the circumstances of the prosecutor general’s appointment.
Agnė Širinskienė, the committee’s chairwoman, told BNS on Wednesday that they would ask the Prosecutor General’s Office for access to certain portions of the pre-trial investigation.
The daily Lietuvos Rytas in late April published what it said were excerpts from emails between Grybauskaitė and Masiulis via tulpes@lrpk.lt between 2014 and 2016.
Based on the extracts, the president and the then Liberal leader discussed the appointment of prosecutor general. Grybauskaitė allegedly wrote that LNK TV channel’s journalist Tomas Dapkus “speaks nonsense” about Evaldas Pašilis and suggested “giving regards” to Darius Mockus, president of MG Baltic that owns the TV channel, telling him “to take his hound away”.
In a document made public on Monday, the State Security Department tells the parliament’s Committee on National Security and Defense (NSGK) that Dapkus, as a middleman for the top executives of MG Baltic, one of Lithuania’s biggest business groups, was allegedly engaged in blackmail activities.
Grybauskaitė said in early May that she had had email exchanges with the former Liberal Movement leader, but added that she could not confirm the authenticity of the emails published in the media.
The president admitted having sought support from politicians for candidatures for the prosecutor general’s job, but dismissed as untrue allegations that she had discussed candidates for the post with MG Baltic via Masiulis.
