Polish community stages protest in Vilnius over school reorganization

Meanwhile, the central government says both Lithuanian and Polish secondary schools are being reorganized due to falling numbers of schoolchildren.

The police say the Monday protest was attended by around 700 people.

Also in attendance was Deputy Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas and LLRA member Jaroslav Narkevič who said that the Ministry of Education and Science should give special treatment to ethnic minority schools.

“The so-called positive discrimination is practiced in the European Union and internationally,” he told BNS.

Meanwhile First Deputy Government Chancellor and former Vice-Minister of Education and Science Rimantas Vaitkus said Lithuanian, Polish and Russian schools in Lithuania are undergoing the same reorganization, and called the LLRA protest “a political show.”

“With no doubt, the issue involved around 150 schools, and the law demands that secondary schools be reorganized by September 1. And this is a mere political show,” Vaitkus told journalists.
