The president underlined that Lithuania would continue its successful cooperation with the European Parliament in coordinating positions on critical continental agenda issues as well as in working jointly and responsibly towards a united, strong and prosperous Europe.
In her message of congratulations published by the President’s Office, Grybauskaitė wrote that Lithuania highly appreciated the efforts of the European Parliament to restore people’s confidence in European integration. According to the president, in the face of challenges confronting the continent, we must continue an open dialogue and pursue long-term goals aimed at strengthening European values and civic unity.
Grybauskaitė wished the new president of the European Parliament the best of success in performing the important duties of his position.
Tajani, a member of the European People’s Party from Italy, was elected to the post in a secret ballot on Tuesday, with support of 351 MEPs of the 713 votes in the 4th round of voting.
Tajani will head the EP until June of 2019, replacing Social Democrat Martin Schulz of Germany.
