“It is likely that the discovered document is a copy of the February 16 act with the original signatures that was handed to Germany. This is extremely joyful news in the run-up to the state’s 100th anniversary,” Grybauskaitė said in a comment sent to BNS by her office.
“I hope that more thorough research will confirm the authenticity of the document and we will be able to ask for the document to be handed over to Lithuania,” she added.
Liudas Mažylis, a professor at Vytautas Magnus University, confirmed to BNS on Wednesday that he had found the Lithuanian-language original of the act in the German Foreign Ministry’s archives in Berlin on Wednesday.
The document is kept in the ministry’s political archives in a group of files called “The Future of the Baltic Provinces: Lithuania”.
