President hopes for opposition support to reforms of ruling parties

“The package of strategic reforms is huge, therefore, it crucial for the Seimas to work in harmony here and with utmost professionalism. The government should not just know or want to draft the reforms but also be capable of doing this and persuade the society on how the results should be achieved,” Grybauskaitė told journalists after the meeting.

“Of course, in Seimas, it is not just the ruling coalition but also (…) the opposition are responsible, if the reforms are needed for the state, if they are transparent, I truly wish and would like to hope for the support coming from the opposition,” said the president before the parliament opens its spring session on March 10.

She listed four areas subject to the key tasks and challenges: reform of the public sector and more transparency in state governance, efforts to ensure social security of the residents, military and energy security.

In Grybauskaitė’s words, the parliament should this spring focus on the public sector reform, which should bring more transparency to state governance and, more importantly, the end of the era of nomenclature-style governance.

Restructuring the state-run railway company, forestry companies and the Center of Registers is crucial, however, the nation should be given a clear explanation of the course of the reforms.
