President nominates Skvernelis for prime minister

“In exercising the powers conferred on me by the Constitution, I am today nominating Saulius Skvernelis for the post of prime minister. I am stating that the ruling majority has been already formed,” Grybauskaitė said while presenting his candidature to the Seimas.

“I expect the Seimas to support Skvernelis’ candidature for the post of prime minister,” she added.

The president said after meeting with Skvernelis earlier this week that she expected the new ruling coalition to adopt decisions to increase social security and combat social exclusion.

Skvernelis’ candidature will be now considered by the Seimas’ political groups and then by the full parliament. The candidate is to start meetings with political groups on Thursday.

If Skvernelis is supported by the Seimas and appointed as prime minister, he will have up to 15 days to form his Cabinet and have it approved by the president and present the new government and its program to the parliament for approval.

Skvernelis, a former police chief and interior minister, topped the Peasant and Green Union’s list for the October parliamentary elections, in which the party scored a resounding victory.

The LPGU’s political group in the Seimas has 59 members. The Social Democrats, the Peasants and Greens’ coalition partner, have a 19-strong group in the parliament.
