President says parliamentary probes won’t silence her

The Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union‘s (LVŽS) initiative to investigate interest groups’ influence on political processes during the tenure of two previous governments earlier this week passed the first reading in the Seimas.

“Let me make it very clear that if the purpose of the commission will be, among other things, to try and frighten me or silence me so that I don’t criticize the ruling bloc’s actions, then that commission won’t achieve this goal,” Grybauskaitė said in an interview with LRT Radio aired on Thursday morning.

“If I see unconstitutional behavior, efforts to restrict human rights and freedoms, or illiterate or corrupt decisions, then I’ll identify such actions and I’ll do my best to stop them within the framework of my competence,” she added.

The new parliamentary commission would investigate possible unlawful influence on political processes, appointments to high-ranking positions and the legislative process between 2008 and 2016.

The LVŽS has said they want to investigate Grybauskaitė’s email exchanges with former Liberal Movement leader Eligijus Masiulis, a former leader of the Liberal Movement who is now on trial on political corruption charges.
