Ranks of euro supporters swell to 47 percent in Lithuania

Since spring, the ranks of euro supporters in the country have grown by 1 percentage point to 47 percent.

However, the ranks of euro opponents increased as well – to 49 percent in September from 48 percent in April. The remaining 4 percent had no opinion on the issue.

At the same time, 51 percent of the Lithuanians believe that the country is ready to adopt the single currency.

The proportion of the Lithuanians saying that they are well or rather well aware of the euro rose to 70 percent in September, from 50 percent in spring. As much as 96 percent of the respondents said that they were aware that Lithuania would adopt the euro in 2015.

Some 77 percent said that they had seen euro banknotes and 72 percent said the same about euro coins.

Asked about the benefits of the single currency, 86 percent of the respondents mentioned convenience of travel to the euro area countries and 66 percent mentioned the ease of shopping. Some 50 percent spoke about improved comparability of prices and 47 percent mentioned savings due to elimination of currency exchange fees.

The poll of 1,000 respondents across Lithuania was conducted 4-6 September.
