Reform of Lithuania’s Border Guard Service approved

Minister Skvernelis said the reform will not encompass only one VSAT unit, although in the public sphere just Lazdijai Frontier District on the border with Poland is being mentioned. The latter frontier district will indeed be eliminated, but five other border crossing points will be strengthened. The minister emphasised that border guards are more important than bureaucrats who have nothing in common with the physical protection of the border.

Skvernelis noted that eliminating some of the positions in Lazdijai Frontier District should allow saving EUR 650,000 to 670,000 per year on salaries and social insurance fees. The funds will be used to raise wages of other border guards, improve their working conditions and technical equipment.
