Lithuania’s last partisan Kraujelis-Siaubūnas remains found

Remains of Lithuania’s last partisan Antanas Kraujelis-Siaubūnas were found and identified in Vilnius today. Genetic studies have confirmed the identity of Antanas Kraujelis-Siaubūnas.

In the search organized by the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania, the remains of five persons with gunshot injuries were found in Vilnius Orphan’s Cemetery. The search was conducted by Gintautas Vėlius, the archaeologist of the Vilnius University.

The remains of last Lithuania’s partisan Kraujelis-Siaubūnas, the chief of the headquarters of LLKS Žėrutis district, who fought in the districts of Anykščiai, Utena, and Molėtai, were searched for several decades.

Antanas Kraujelis-Siaubūnas joined the forest brothers to fight the Soviet occupation in 1948 and was involved in partisan activities in the Aukštaitija region. He shot himself on March 17, 1965, while encircled by KGB officers. This operation was led by infamous KGB officer Nachman Dushansky.
