Ruling party moves to cut MP seats to 121

“Despite demographic changes facing the state, the number of Seimas members has remained unchanged at 141 members. It would be fair to take into account significant changes in the population and follow the example of other countries,” LVŽS leader Ramūnas Karbauskis said in a press release on Friday.

The LVŽS notes that Lithuania currently has a population of 2.8 million, down from 3.7 million in 1992, when the Constitution, which sets the number of members of the Seimas at 141, was adopted.

The draft constitutional amendment has been signed by Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, and 44 members of the LVŽS political group in the Seimas.

The ruling party earlier proposed to cut the number of seats in the parliament to 101 and to hold general elections in March rather than in October.

The government gave a positive opinion on the proposed amendments, but the bill made no further progress.

Karbauskis has told reporters earlier that the LVŽS alone does not have enough votes to adopt the initiative, which is not supported by other political groups in the parliament.
