Members of the Lithuanian diaspora do not approve of the initiative due to claims that the referendum would fail to draw the required voter turnout. At the commission’s plenary meeting, a project will be submitted to relax the citizenship referendum’s conditions.
A group of Social Democrats have proposed a Referendum Law amendment that would allow the law on citizenship to be changed with the approval of 2/3 of those who vote in the referendum, making it easier for the amendment to pass with a lower voter turnout.
Members of the Lithuanian diaspora have asked for the referendum not to be held, instead requesting that the granting of Lithuanian citizenship and its revocation for the new wave of emigrants be considered as separate questions. However, Seimas speaker Birutė Vėsaitė said that, according to the Constitutional Court, the conditions for dual citizenship can only be expanded in a referendum.
