Seimas may set up ad-hoc commission over dual food quality

The initiative is supported by 42 members of the LFGU group in the Seimas.

The MPs say that the 12-strong commission should determine the reasons why compositions of identically branded products differ and look for a possible violation of consumer rights and signs of unfair practices. The panel would also look at why it was only recently that the Lithuanian Food and Veterinary Service carried out product quality tests.

The authority has said recently that it tested 33 products sold both in Lithuania and in Germany and that in 23 of the products, there were differences in the taste, ingredients, color or consistency.

Central and Eastern European countries complain that products sold in their markets are of inferior quality and call for banning such practices. Under the EU’s rules, companies are free to change the ingredients of a product in individual member countries provided that the ingredients are clearly indicated on the packaging.

Producers dismiss the criticism, saying that products sold in different markets differ in their taste, not in quality.
