The resolution was proposed by the liberal MP Gintaras Steponavičius. It was endorsed by a vote of 26 to nine abstentions.
The move is a response to recent “divisive” statements by Gediminas Grina, a former head of the State Security Department, who said that Lithuania’s Russian-language schools are being used by Moscow to indoctrinate Lithuanian citizens of Russian descent and suggested to dismantle the minority school network altogether.
The Seimas resolution pledges to “continue providing conditions for ethnic community members to receive secondary education in schools where they can foster their language, culture and customs”.
The resolution also states that Lithuania’s commitments and policies in ensuring ethnic minority rights remains consistent and in line with the Constitution and international law.
