Seimas takes 1st step toward publishing names of self-confessed ex-KGB agents

The proposal on Thursday passed the first reading in the Seimas with 55 votes in favor, 34 against and nine abstentions.

The decision to open debates was supported by most lawmakers of the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS), the LLRA-KŠS and the Order and Justice party, as well as several members from the Social Democratic Party group and the Social Democratic Labor Party group each.

The “no” votes mostly came from the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats and the Liberal Movement.

The bill will now be discussed at parliamentary committees and is expected to return to the full Seimas in the fall session.

The draft law tabled by the LLRA-KŠS calls for making public the names of former KBG collaborators who have voluntarily admitted to secret collaboration with the Soviet secret service. Their names are now classified as a state secret.
