Seimas takes to deliberating on LRT activities investigation commission’s conclusions again

A group of MPs appealed to the KT already in January, requesting to review if the creation of the LRT investigation commission was not counter to the Constitution.

During the Seimas’ plenary agenda approval, Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats Seimas group member Jurgis Razma proposed to not discuss the conclusions today, however the Seimas voted to overrule this. The conclusions are to be deliberated on for the second time now, with the process stopping earlier, pending responses from the ethics watchdog on various complaints.

The LRT Council is urging the Seimas to not rush and hold a broad discussion on proposals to change the national radio and television law.

Based on the amendments being proposed, a national broadcaster board would be established, Council composition principles changed, their terms shortened, advertising on its portal banned.

With the LRT Council urging MPs to not rush to changes in the legislation and hold broad discussions, Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union chairman Ramūnas Karbauskis states that the amendments will be passed in the Seimas’ spring session.

Similar propositions are presented in the broadcaster investigation commission’s conclusions as well.

The proposals to adjust management face much criticism from opposition representatives, due to the potential politicization of the LRT, the European Broadcaster’s Union and various other Lithuanian and foreign organisations as well have warned the Seimas.
