Siberian monument to Lithuanian gulag deportees unveiled

The small monument was unveiled on Friday and contains inscriptions in Lithuanian and Russia “In memory of Lithuanian deportees and political prisoners”.

The sculpture, located on a square by a former NKVD prison which now serves as a memorial museum, has been created by the Lithuanian artist Tadas Gutauskas.

Tomsk Oblast was one of the primary destinations of Lithuanians who were deported en masse by Soviet authorities between 1941 and 1952. According to documents, 1,309 Lithuanians were deported to Tomsk in 1941 alone. Some 4,250 were sent to the region in Siberia for forced labour in 1951-1952.

Some 800 Lithuanians lived in Tomsk in 1991.
