Smear campaign against President Grybauskaitė in European Parliament

The book’s author, journalist Rūta Janutienė says she discovered about it from reporters who contacted her for comment and was not aware that her book was translated into English. She says the publisher details given in the English edition are false and copied from the Lithuanian edition.

Lithuanian MEP Gabrielius Landsbergis says the incident is yet another information attack against the Lithuanian leader.

“It cannot be a coincidence that such publications, aimed at embarrassing President Dalia Grybauskaitė and denigrating her reputation, appear soon after her harsh statements on Russia and active support for Ukraine. This book has been translated into English, brought to Brussels, distributed for free, delivered to the mail boxes of all 751 MEPs,” Landsbergis told DELFI.

Brussels insiders say that distributing so many copies of a book in the European Parliament is a costly affair, pointing to a well-planned effort. Moreover, only people with special permission have access to MEPs’ mail boxes.
