The party’s council held a sitting on Saturday to discuss the results of the local elections. Social Democratic leader, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius noted the party has increased its number of mandates won as well as the number of people who voted for the party. 181,000 people voted for the Social Democrats in 2011 and the number was up to 214,000 this year.
“A higher number of mandates and voters is a major achievement of all of us, dear friends, and also the result of our effort,” Butkevičius said.
The biggest failure, however, was the loss of mayoral positions in the cities if Alytus, Šiauliai, Pakruojis and also Tauragė District. The party is also critical about the results in major cities. For example, in Vilnius, the number of voters dropped by 5,000 and, all in all, the party lost around 9,000 votes in major cities.
Speaking about the upcoming general elections, Algirdas Sysas, head of the party’s election headquarters, said the Social Democrats need to move to the left more to stand out among central parties.
The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania won the highest number – 359 – of seats on local councils during the recent local elections and 16 Social Democrats were elected mayors.
