Paluckas is the party’s executive secretary and former administration director of Vilnius. He has also been convicted of abuse of office.
“He is a young, promising and bright person who has such passion which, next to knowledge and wisdom, is a must for politicians too. I believe that he is well cut out for this office and would work properly for the sake of Vilnius city and its people,” Butkevičius said.
The Social Democrats will officially decide on their candidate to run in the elections to the Vilnius mayor post during the party’s Vilnius chapter conference on 20 September.
As reported, MP Remigijus Šimašius will be the mayoral candidate of the Liberal Movement party, while the conservative Homeland Union has suggested nominating former finance minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
Municipal elections will be held on 1 March 2015. For the first time, voters will be directly electing mayors as well as municipal councils.
