Spanish student in Lithuania: I prefer Kaunas to Vilnius

23-year-old Adrian from Spain is an exchange student at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and is actively involved in the cultural life of both the university and the city.

Soon after arriving in Kaunas Adrian decided to do something he really enjoyed – he started teaching Latin American dances. He is also actively involved in organising various KTU events.

The Spanish student has already gotten used to living in Kaunas. Although he has been to Vilnius several times, he says he enjoys Kaunas more.

“I love living in Kaunas. I think I am one of the few people who prefer Kaunas to Vilnius. I really like that here I can experience a real Lithuanian lifestyle. Moreover, Kaunas is the place which gives me enough opportunity to improve myself,” Garcia tells DELFI.

Adrian is also fascinated by how green Kaunas is.

“What I like most is that Kaunas has a strong feeling of nature. For example, every time I walk across Ąžuolynas Park, I feel like I am in a movie! A very special feeling at Ąžuolynas Park comes when you are there at night.

“There is also one thing which surprised me a lot. It is the safety of Kaunas. Kaunas is a very safe place. I did not get any chance to witness a single act of crime while living here. Although before coming here, I had been told that it was very unsafe in Kaunas,” the student says.

Adrian gives dance lessons in Kaunas and also got interested in martial arts.

„I spend my free time either teaching to dance or in gym. Dancing is my passion. Once I arrived here, I started to go to all Latin American parties. Last year, with people from all over the world I participated in my first big Salsa festival in Vilnius. My second passion is working out. Last year, I started learning martial arts and went crazy about them. Right now I am learning Krav Maga, a self-defence system which comes from Israel.”

In his opinion, there are no perfect cities and Kaunas is not an exception.

“What I do not like about Kaunas is that, compared to the Mediterranean peoples, Lithuanians are really cold. Sometimes I think that if it weren’t for a few really good Lithuanian friends, it would be really hard to live here. Anyhow, I understand perfectly well that cultures are different in every country,” Adrian tells DELFI.
