Stricter speeding fines and lower tolerance proposed by Ministry of Interior

The proposal, which would come into force on 1 January 2017, was registered with the parliament (Seimas) on Tuesday.

The proposal stipulates an increase in fines per kmh over the speed limit depending on the vehicle used, the driver’s experience level, and the severity of the speeding violation.

Stasys Brundza, a member of the Seimas who was once a famous Lithuanian racecar driver and automobile collector, said that he fears that the calculation of fines for every single kmh over the speed limit may be problematic due to speed detectors’ 3kmh margin of error. However, he also said he had not yet read the proposal.

“The devices have margins of error, so when they start counting one or two kilometers and you add the device’s margin of error… Perhaps it’s good, but they might be over-complicating things. I do not think these changes would fundamentally change traffic safety. If they apply fines for every kilometer over the speed limit, imagine how much work they would have to do administrating these fines. It could be difficult,” Brundza told tv3.

Brundza also said that drivers who had exceeded the speed limit by several kmh would take their cases to court and swamp the system with legal cases.
