Teachers call off strike after meeting prime minister

Teachers, who are demanding higher wages, were planning a three day action on 27-29 January. However, after the Ministry of Education and Science presented proposals for incremental pay rises last week and meeting government representatives on Thursday, most unions abandoned up the plan for strike action.

“We must consolidate all unions and hold together preserving that solidarity. In our effort to find a compromise, we see good will on the government’s part […]. The decision will be made, probably today, to refrain from extreme measures until February 3,” said Eugenijus Jesinas, chairman of the Lithuanian Education Institutions Union, told reporters.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius took part in the teachers’ meeting with government representatives, although it had not been on his agenda.
