There will be no mosque in Vilnius, liberal mayor says

“I only know there are two working mosques in Lithuania today, and none of the two are situated in Vilnius. And we have no plans in the near future to change anything, build anything, no progress in this sphere. Vilnius has a lot of other problems,” the Vilnius mayor told the news programme of the LNK TV channel on Thursday.

“The construction of a mosque is definitely not that issue that needs a breakthrough today,” Šimašius, of the Liberal Movement party, added.

Social democrat Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius also agrees that building a mosque in Vilnius is unnecessary.

“I think that other premises could also be prepared, if they need to worship and do other procedures,” he told the same programme.

Meanwhile Lithuania’s Mufti Romas Jakubauskas hopes for “benevolence” from the mayor and claims that a Muslim community of several thousand people needs a mosque as now the rites are performed in a room that is not suited for the purpose.
