Traffic offenders will have to pay fines to obtain driving licenses

Under the amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety, people will have to pay all of their outstanding traffic fines in order to be issued with a new driving license or have the existing one replaced.

According to information provided to BNS by the traffic police, almost 343,000 traffic violations were registered in the country last year and fines for these violations totaled around 15.2 million euros, of which only 8.1 million euros were paid.

Police say that they expect the new amendments, which will take effect next December, to deter motorists from violating traffic rules.

There are about 1.551 million driving license holders in Lithuania, Regitra, a state enterprise that issues driving licenses, told BNS.
