Transgender Lithuanians share their stories in online videos

Produced by the LGL and the Lithuanian filmmaker Romas Zabarauskas, the videos feature transgender people talking about their personal experiences in the country which is thought to be among the least LGBT-friendly in the European Union.

There is no legal way for transgender people in Lithuania to change their papers so that they specify the gender they identify with. The videos ask viewers to sign a petition urging the authorities to change that.

“I cannot just show my ID card to someone without putting myself in an awkward situation. It’s very hard and I don’t think it’s how it should be,” says Oskaras, an 18-year-old trans man.

According to the LGL, increasingly more countries in Europe are adopting legislation to ensure the right of transgender people to have their gender identity officially recognized without going through sex reassignment surgery. This is needed to facilitate trans people’s social and economic integration into the society. Moreover, not all trans people wish or can have surgical sex reassignment procedure.

The LGL says that the #TRANS_LT petition, which can be signed online, will be presented to the Lithuanian parliament – and other institutions – during its spring 2016 plenary sitting.
