The Lithuanian Seimas’ Assembly of Elders on Thursday agreed to remove the two registered bills, which would open the way for impeached and removed Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas to run for parliament, from the parliament’s agenda.
The author of one of the bills, Julius Sabatauskas, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, said there was no point in amending the Law on Elections to the Seimas without changes to the country’s Constitution.
At the moment, a person who has grossly violated the Lithuanian Constitution or has breached an oath of office and has been impeached and removed by the Seimas or has had their mandate revoked, cannot be elected a member of parliament.
It’s the second attempt during this parliament to amend the Constitution and laws regarding Paksas. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the existing lifetime ban for this politician to run for parliament is disproportionate.
