A third Lithuanian climber survived the avalanche unhurt. It happened on Sunday, in Grands Montets, a ski area above Argentiere. Grands Montets is among several peaks in the Mont Blanc range.
It was the first fatal avalanche in the French Alps this winter. The fresh snow has increased the avalanche risk.
Saulius Damulevičius, president of the Lithuanian Mountaineering Association, told BNS on Sunday evening that one of the killed Lithuanians was an experienced climber and a member of the association. He said he had contacted French officials who told him the two Lithuanian died after a piece of ice broke off following an avalanche.
While Damulevičius would not give away the identities of the deceased, Criminal Police Bureau chief Rolandas Kiškis later confirmed one of them was his deputy Artūras Bazys.
