Two Lithuanian ex-MPs go on trial for picketing outside prosecutor’s home

The men, who were members of the Order and Justice political group in the parliament, are charged with hindering the prosecutor in performing his duties, an offense punishable by community service, a fine, restriction of liberty or a custodial sentence for up to two years.

Both defendants deny their guilt.

Komskis, Vasiliauskas and Petras Gražulis, another Order and Justice lawmaker, staged the picket outside Mikelionis’ home in March 2016 after the prosecutor said that he would ask the European Parliament to strip MEP Rolandas Paksas, who was then their party’s leader, of his immunity in a suspected corruption case.

According to the indictment, the picket made the prosecutor’s family feel insecure.

Gražulis was the only participant of the picket to be reelected to the Seimas in last October’s elections. Under the Constitution, a member of the parliament enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution, which can only be lifted by the parliament.

The lawmaker was questioned as a special witness in this case.

The Seimas earlier this year turned Prosecutor General Evaldas Pašilis‘ request to lift Grazulis’ immunity from prosecution.
