Two new ASF cases reported in east Lithuania

An immediate investigation was launched after Ignalina VMVT branch received information that one pig died without any clinical signs in a homestead in Ceikinai eldership (15 kilometres from UAB Idavang, the hotbed of ASF) and another pig was found dead in a homestead in Dūkštas eldership (24km from the ASF hotbed).

In the first case, people kept two pigs in a farm, whereas only one pig was kept in the second location. The VMVT inspectors instantly declared quarantine to ascertain the diagnosis.

The results were in on Wednesday and showed that all three pigs were infected with the African swine fever virus.

Three-kilometre infection zones and 10-kilometre monitoring zones were established around both farms. According to the VMVT, there are 17 pig farmers who keep 44 pigs within the new ASF infection zones. Meanwhile, in the 10km monitoring zones there are a total of 85 pig farmers that keep 235 pigs.

Farmers who live within the 3km infection zones will be recommended to slaughter their livestock and consume the meat only after laboratory testing. While the 10km monitoring zones will be put under stricter supervision, collecting samples of all the pigs.
