US recruited Lithuanian Nazi collaborator to spy for CIA

Academics studying the declassified documents from the post-WWII era say America used at least 1,000 ex-Nazis to serve as spies in Europe.

One of them was Aleksandras Lileikis, Nazi collaborator from Lithuania linked to massacres of local Jews. According to US records, Lileikis was recruited to spy in East Germany and later brought over to Boston.

Evidence suggests that the CIA even tried to intervene when a war crimes investigation looked into Lileikis’ actions during the Holocaust.

Lileikis was a security police chief in Vilnius during the German occupation of Lithuania in 1941-1944. Under his orders, many Jews were handed over to the Nazis to be killed.

After the war, he spent some time in a refugee camp in Germany, from where he went to the US in 1955. In 1996, however, he was stripped of his US citizenship after being accused of war crimes.

Lileikis was tried for complicity in the extermination of Jews in Lithuania, but was found too infirm to stand trial. He died in 2000, aged 93.
