Uspaskich’s return to head Labor Party would have no future – Lithuanian PM

Skvernelis also said that, in his opinion, voters of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union differ from the Labor Party’s electorate, therefore, the Labor Party is unlikely to attract the LFGU electorate.

“I think or at least hope that our electorate is not the same, I would truly want to believe this. And the comeback attempt – we should ask Viktor to give us the reasons. However, knowing all the stories in connection to the law-enforcement and knowing that they are not yet finished, I do not want to say this but I think the decision has no future. (…) If members of the party see him as a potential leader, it is up to them,” the prime minister told Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning.

Uspaskich, the Labor Party’s founder and long-term leader, says he will probably run for the party’s leadership. “Most probably. I do not rule this out,” he told BNS earlier this week.

The Labor Party will hold elections for the party’s leader next February after Širvintos Mayor Živilė Pinskuvienė stepped down from the post immediately after Uspaskich’s return. The party is now headed by former culture minister Šarūnas Birutis on temporary basis.
