“In tenth grade, I decided to choose disciplines that I like – English and Chemistry. I have read universities’ programmes and got interested in biochemistry. Have some doubts, since I have heard the exams are really difficult, but everything went perfectly in the end. I am pleased with the results of the exams” – said the schoolgirl of Klaipėda “Ąžuolynas” gymnasium who, together with other pupils that got top marks in school graduation exams nationally, was honoured at the Palace of Grand Dukes on Friday.
The girl, who was born and grew up in the Lithuanian seaport town of Klaipėda, is planing to study biochemistry in Vilnius university. “I am a very curious person, care to try everything and I think biochemistry has wide opportunities – maybe I can contribute in the development of new drugs or conservation,” says the high-school graduate.
The eldest child in the family
Mai Nguyen Ngoc has not been very willing to talk about her family, because it is very personal. However, she mentions she has a younger brother and a sister: “I am the eldest in the family. My brother is ten and my sister is seven years old, they do not have to think about exams yet, however, I hope they will achieve great results as well and the family will be proud.”
At home, Mai speaks Vietnamese with her family. Her father and mother understand some Lithuanian words. Her mother is fluent in Russian. “I have passed Lithuanian exam satisfactorily, because I have more aptitude for sciences. I got about 80 percent in the Lithuanian state language exam. It was enough for me,” says Mai Nguyen Ngoc, who went to a Lithuanian-language school from the first class. She wants to do an undergraduate degree in Lithuania and then go for further studies abroad.
Other pupils who got highest 100-percent marks in national graduation exams also shared their future plans with DELFI. On Friday, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and the minister of Education have honoured them at the Palace of Grand Dukes.
