Vilnius launches modern surveillance system

Jointly-operated by Vilnius Municipality and Vilnius County Police, the 900,000 euro-worth system of cameras was installed by Telia Lietuva and will be maintained by the company for seven years.

Saulius Gagas, chief of Vilnius County Police, told journalists on Friday the installation of 103 cameras took around a year. They were put in places with highest crime rates.

High-resolution cameras will send images to a special room at Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat where two operators will work. The main focus will be put on the central part of Vilnius, including Gediminas Avenue, the Cathedral Square, Kudirka Square, Town Hall Square, as well as the central railway, city entries and the local Roma settlement.

Gagas underlined that camera images will be used only for police purposes and will be automatically deleted after a month. Although in some cases they might be archived.
