Vilnius mulls introducing “pillow tax” next year

The local council is scheduled to discuss the issue next week.

According to Šimašius, the proposal was made by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants as well as hotels that are not members of the association. The money would be spent on image improving and for a special fund to attract more flights to Vilnius.

“The levy would come into force with certain exceptions as of January 1 and would fully come into force in a year after that. There are exceptions for already signs agreements for tourist groups where the price and everything else have been agreed. It would fully come into force in a year and a half,” Šimašius told BNS.

Under the plan, the levy for an overnight stay in Vilnius would stand at 50 euro cent per person, and would rise to EUR 1 as of 2017.
