The minister says 2,200 young men have already volunteered for military service and Lithuania plans to conscript 3,000 men altogether.
“The conscription process is taking place fairly smoothly. We want to conscript 3,000 and 2,200 men have already volunteered. We still have several months, so I think we might really expect those 3,000,” Olekas told journalists in Vilnius on Wednesday.
The defense minister is also glad that young motivated men sign up for military service and 90 percent of them are fit for service.
Lithuania reintroduced conscription last spring.
