According to data provided by the Central Electoral Commission, votes were cast by 36,827 voters on Wednesday, i.e., 1.48 percent of the electorate. This includes 29,852 voters who voted in municipalities and 6,975 voters in special post offices.
Meanwhile, the voter turnout on the first day of early voting in the 2012 elections was 26,816 or 1.04 percent of the electorate, including over 19,000 in municipalities and about 7,000 in special post offices.
“We see an increase in voter activity, and today voters are more active. I spoke to municipalities and they said large numbers of young people came to vote, voters are actively exercising their right to elect,” Laura Matjošaitytė, deputy chairman of the election watchdog, told BNS.
Early voting in the October 9 parliamentary elections opened in premises of all municipalities on Wednesday and will close at 8 p.m. on Thursday, providing an opportunity to cast ballots to those voters who are unable to come to their polling station on Sunday, the official election day.
