The VRK established that the referendum on land sale to foreigners and referendum initiation process had not taken place.
380,178 or 14.98 percent of voters took part in the referendum. 2.559,398 Lithuanian citizens had the right to vote in it. 10,754 or 2.83 ballots were recognized void.
269,049 voters, which is 10.6 percent of total eligible voters or 70.77 percent of those who took part in the referendum, voted “Yes” in the referendum.
100,375 voters, which is 3.95 percent of total eligible voters or 26.4 percent of those who took part in the referendum, voted “No” in the referendum.
The mandatory referendum was held on the following amendments to the Constitution: lowering the number of signatures needed to invoke referendums from 300,000 to 100,000, retaining Lithuanian citizenship as a prerequisite for owning freehold land in Lithuania (forests, lakes, parks), including a provision that decisions made by a referendum can be overruled only by holding another referendum.
The referendum would be considered to have taken place if over 50 percent of eligible citizens took part in it.
