Previously airspace was closed only over Crimea. In other instances, according to the Civil Aviation Administration, airlines have to assess the situation in countries which airspace flight routes cross and plan them taking into account the increased risks.
Civil aviation experts note that in cases of an armed conflict, a country in which it takes place assumes responsibility for the safety of foreign airliners crossing its airspace. If a country officially informs about no-flight zone, then the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) issues a statement regarding flight restrictions which have to be adhered to by airlines and flight routes have to be planned accordingly.
