“The majority are against longer academic year, with more opposition from the parents who have school-aged children,” Vladas Gaidys, Vilmorus CEO, told BNS in comment of the survey carried out in early April.

The plans to make the school year longer was supported by 15.6 percent of respondents, while 38.6 percent were in full disagreement and 24.1 percent were rather against. Another 21.5 percent said they were neither in support, nor against the proposed change, shows the poll.

The survey of 1,001 adult residents of Lithuania was conducted on April 1-9.

Education and Science Minister Jurgita Petrauskienė has suggested extending academic year for schools by 10-15 days in an effort to distribute the work load more evenly. The Trade Union of Lithuanian Education Workers held a protest action earlier this week in protest of the plans.
