A final decision will be made by the government.

“The level of political activity in Switzerland is not high; visits by high-ranking officials are organized every three years on average. Switzerland’s embassy to Lithuania has been accredited from Latvia since 1992. Switzerland does not plan to establish its embassy in Lithuania in the short term,” the ministry said.

Trade between Lithuania and Switzerland has not returned to the level of the 2008 economic crisis and Switzerland’s direct investment in Lithuania has been on the decline, it noted.

Around 8,000 Swiss tourists visit Lithuania annually.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Lithuania will seek to maintain the current level of cooperation with Switzerland following the closure of the embassy.

A consular office is planned to be established in Geneva for consular activities.

Figures from Swiss migration officials show that over 2,000 Lithuanians live in the country.
